How to Manage Strategic Risks with Scores, Owners and Mitigation Actions

A practical walkthrough of a risk register that scores likelihood and impact, names an owner for every risk and tracks mitigation actions until they are done.

Most strategies fail on risks everybody knew about but nobody owned. A risk register only helps when every risk has a score, an owner and a concrete action with a due date.

Why it matters

Scoring likelihood times impact puts the biggest threats on top, so leadership time goes where it matters. Mitigation actions with owners and due dates turn worry into work, and the residual score shows whether that work actually reduced the risk.

Step by step: Manage Risks and Mitigation Actions

Keep the biggest threats to the strategy visible, scored and owned, with mitigation actions that are followed through.

Manage Risks and Mitigation Actions in the Aitraxus ACME demo project

  1. Open Risk Management; risks are sorted by severity with the highest score first.
  2. Add a risk with category, likelihood and impact; the score and level (High, Medium) are calculated for you.
  3. Assign an owner and set the status, for example Open or Mitigating.
  4. Under Mitigation actions, add actions with an owner and due date; overdue actions are flagged in red.
  5. Track the residual score to see how much each action reduces the risk.

Tip: Click any row to edit it. Review the top risks in every board meeting.

Try it free in your own workspace or open the ACME demo project after signing up to see a filled out example.

Bottom line

Review the top risks in every leadership or board meeting, close actions on time and watch the residual scores fall. That is what a living risk register looks like.
